About Us

Who we are...

Moreton Bay Koala Rescue Inc. (MBKR) is a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, with a primary focus of the rescue of sick, injured, displaced or orphaned koalas across the City of Moreton Bay. Our volunteers are from all parts of the region, and reflect a growing concern within the community for the visibly rapid decline in our resident koala population and their habitat.

Our aim...

MBKR aims to promote the plight of koalas and to protect and preserve for future generations through the following:

  • Provide a 24 hour rescue service for sick, injured, displaced or orphaned koalas within City of Moreton Bay and surrounding areas;
  • To provide a 24 hour transport service for sick, injured, displaced or orphaned koalas to specialised wildlife hospitals;
  • To record accurate statistics of koala sightings and rescues within City of Moreton Bay and surrounding areas;
  • To raise public awareness, funding, community support and sponsorship for MBKR;
  • To educate the general public on how they may assist in the long-term survival of the koala, other wildlife and their natural environment;
  • To advocate to government departments, politicians and corporations to adopt policies which are beneficial to the environment; and
  • To plant and maintain koala food trees.

Rescue Team

Our Rescue Team is available 24/7 throughout the whole of the City of Moreton Bay. We are a dedicated team who go to great lengths to ensure the survival of our local koala population.

Our Rescue Team consists of Hotline Operators, Rescuers and Ambulance Drivers. Hotline Operators answer all calls received through our 24/7 hotline number and coordinate Rescuers to attend koala sightings and/or rescues. Trained and experienced Rescuers attend all koalas requiring rescuing (i.e. those reported as sick, injured, displaced, orphaned or deceased) and also attend all koala sightings to check the health and safety of each reported koala. Should one of our Rescuer’s determine that a koala requires assistance (i.e. sick, injured, displaced or orphaned) then a rescue will be organised. Our Ambulance Drivers transport rescued koalas to specialised Wildlife Hospitals.

Our Rescue Team are also responsible for the release of koalas that have been rehabilitated.

Tree Planting Team

MBKR is involved with planting new habitat and enhancing corridors for future koalas. Our team regularly works with the City of Moreton Bay Council on tree planting days.

See our Facebook page for details of upcoming tree planting days!

Events & Fundraising Team

MBKR is mainly self-funded, which means that we often do fundraising in the community to raise money for rescue equipment, fuel and trees. Our Events and Fundraising Team has the important job of raising awareness and the funds to help our Rescue and Tree Planting Teams.

See our Facebook page for details of upcoming events!

Education Team

MBKR believes that the more education that we can send out, the better chance we have of koalas surviving in our region. Our Education Team provides presentations to local schools and community groups.

If you would like to organise a presentation please email: secretary@moretonbaykoalarescue.org

Joeys Program

MBKR now offers a Joey’s program for members aged 7 to 13 years.

The program is facilitated by experienced leaders who offer a variety of engaging and interactive activities that give the Joeys the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of koalas and other wildlife. Joeys will learn about the fascinating characteristics and behaviours of these iconic Australian marsupials, as well as the challenges they face in their daily lives.

Tree planting is an integral part of the Joeys program. Attending tree plantings will teach our Joeys (and their parents/carers) about the different types of food trees and undergrowth plantings required for a healthy habitat for koalas and other wildlife.

Activities are normally offered monthly (March to November).

If you would like more information about our Joeys Program please email: secretary@moretonbaykoalarescue.org
